On our recent trip to France we revisited the wonderful Pont du Gard. This aqueduct was built by the Romans to carry a supply of water to the city of Nîmes; for many years a road ran along it above the lower layer of arches and it is now a protected UN Cultural Heritage Site. Frankly it’s amazing that it has lasted all these years, I once walked right along the top of it; can’t do that now though. I think that with its elegant proportions it is one of the most beautiful structures I know.
“What did the Romans ever do for us?” – Gave us clean water.
